Men's Hoops Stumbles in 87-57 Loss at Iowa State

by Aiden Kocol

AMES, Iowa – UCF men’s hoops was unable to recover from an unsteady start Tuesday evening inside Hilton Coliseum, as Iowa State pulled away for an 87-57 win.

The Knights’ (14-4, 3-3) 19 turnovers proved most costly, as the Cyclones (17-2, 4-2) maintained control throughout while committing just five giveaways of their own. Although UCF improved its rebounding in the second half, limiting Iowa State’s extra opportunities, it wasn’t enough to overcome the slow start that stifled the Black and Gold in the first 20-minute stretch.

"We haven't been a high turnover team, this was uncharacteristic of us. So, I really do give them credit. They were defending really well, they were very active, and they made a lot of plays from it."

Head Coach Johnny Dawkins

The Knights dug themselves into an early hole, giving up five straight turnovers in the game’s opening possessions, which Iowa State quickly turned into a 12-2 scoring run, to lead 12-5 with 16 minutes remaining in the opening frame. Offensive struggles continued throughout the first half, as the Knights scraped together just 16 points by the 7:23 mark while Iowa State built on its early momentum to take a 29-16 lead.

A three-pointer from Riley Kugel finally provided a spark, slowly pushing the Knights back on track. His shot ignited a 7-0 run, fueled by four makes on five attempts from the field, pulling the Knights back within striking distance at 31-26 with 4:40 remaining in the first half.

Despite the push, offensive troubles soon resurfaced as the Knights fell into a four-minute scoring drought to close the period, allowing Iowa State to respond with an unanswered 13-0 run and carry a double-digit advantage, 44-26, into the locker room at the break.

The rough first half created one of the most challenging halftime situations the Knights have faced all season, as a team that typically averages 11.5 turnovers per game threw away 13 in the opening 20 minutes alone. The Knights’ inability to control the ball led to a disjointed offensive effort and resulted in their lowest-scoring half of the season.

Facing many of the same struggles they saw in the first half, the Black and Gold had fallen into a 20-point deficit, 35-55, by the 14-minute mark of the second half. While the Knights showed improved activity on the glass, ultimately grabbing 32 against the Cyclones’ 38, the group's offensive inefficiency and turnovers continued to prevent any sustained momentum.

UCF briefly found a response behind Jordan Burks, who capitalized on multiple offensive rebounds, knocking down a pair of three-pointers to momentarily halt Iowa State runs and cut the scoring gap to 15, 58-43, with just under 10 minutes to play.

Burks closed the night with 15 points and a team‑high seven rebounds, while Kugel matched him with 15 points of his own to help lead the Knights’ offense.

Still, every surge was brief. UCF’s turnovers repeatedly stalled any momentum they tried to build, and Iowa State capitalized on nearly every mistake, converting them into 31 points. That swing proved to be the difference, as the Cyclones snapped their two‑game losing slide with an 87-57 win inside Hilton Coliseum.
