Knights in the NFL: Week 1

by Ava Jessum

ORLANDO - The wait is over, the 2025 NFL season has finally begun. Within the first week of play several UCF alumni left their mark on the field, setting the tone for what is to come this season.

In an exciting twist, the Buffalo Bills signed veteran kicker Matt Prater the Thursday before their week one contest against Baltimore. The Ravens built a halftime lead and a large lead late but fought their way back.

The game came down to a field goal. With the week one contest on the line, Prater successfully made his 32-yard kick, securing the win for Buffalo as time expired. Prater made all three of his field goal attempts Sunday night.

It was a full-circle moment for Prater, who back in 2002 nailed the first field goal of his collegiate career for UCF. Twenty-three years later, he's still got it. Prater's most significant records are holding the NFL record for most career field goals of 50 yards or longer with 81 and previously holding the record for the longest field goal (64 yards). He also holds a record for consecutive makes from 50+ yards (14) and a Cardinals franchise record for most 50+ yard field goals in a season (nine in 2023).

It wasn’t just the vets making noise. Rookie RJ Harvey had a standout debut game with the Broncos. He had 70 total rushing yards on just six carries. Harvey's play of the game came in the 4th quarter where he had an electric 50-yard rush, the longest by any Broncos rusher since 2022.

Harvey’s breakout performance in week one earned him a nomination for NFL Rookie of the week. Fans can vote here: Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week | NFL.com

The Knights’ NFL footprint doesn’t stop there. Returning Knights include Mike Hughes, who recently signed on for his third season with Tampa Bay. Hughes had two tackles in game one for the Buccaneers. Defensive lineman Kalia Davis is back with the 49ers and had a tackle in their game against Seattle.
