Fall Camp Spotlight: Braeden Marshall

by Aiden Kocol

ORLANDO- With the UCF football team's home kickoff less than a week away, playing at home may bring pressure for some. But for defensive back Braeden Marshall, it brings purpose.

Now a junior and one of the few familiar names on a UCF roster that’s seen major turnover, Marshall has become more than just a defensive back. He’s a hometown anchor in an age of transfers and chaos – one who stayed, one who stuck through it, and one who’s now leading the next generation of Knights.

"It's important to give wisdom to the younger guys, to give them input and pass them the tools I was taught. I want to see them grow because we're in this together, we win this together"

A Florida native, Marshall grew up in Lake Mary and played as Lake Mary High School’s star cornerback on a team that appeared in multiple state playoff competitions. And being just 30 minutes from home has its perks. Marshall’s entire family, from his parents to aunts, uncles, and cousins, shows up in full force, decked out in black and gold for every game.

So, there’s an extra layer of meaning every time he straps on his helmet and hears the crowd roar, in the stadium that isn’t just his college field, but it’s the same ground he grew up around, dreamed about, and stayed loyal to.

"It means so much to see the whole city of Orlando coming out to support us. And it means even more being from Orlando. I'm just so excited to get back in front of the fans, in front of my family.”

Braeden MarshallOn what it means to play close to home

That pride shows up in not only the way he carries himself: calm, focused, and grounded. But it also shows how seriously he takes his leadership role in the defensive room. He’s not trying to prove he’s the best player on the squad, because Marshall knows you can’t win a game with just one man.

"You know, football is probably one of the best team sports in the whole world. When you have brothers to the left and to the right of you, you know that we're gonna lock arms and go to war together."

Braeden MarshallOn the importance of a team mentality

That selfless mindset, which prioritizes team success over personal accolades, is more crucial than ever this season, as head coach Scott Frost and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch lead a cultural transformation at UCF.

One that has reshaped the defense into an aggressive, high-speed unit built on toughness, unity, and relentless energy.

"We're aggressive, we're dangerous, and we're coming."

Braeden MarshallWhen asked to describe this year's defense

Marshall has fully embraced this new identity, not only mastering the system himself but also helping teammates adapt. His physical, instinct-driven style makes him a natural fit for the scheme, and his leadership has become a driving force. Whether it's game day or a fall camp walk-through, Marshall is vocal, engaged, and consistently lifting up those around him, setting the tone for the entire defense. Emphasizing the importance of versatility because the more you know, the more it helps you stay on the field, benefit the team, and be ready for whatever role you're called to play, especially in a deep and flexible defensive backfield.

As the Knights head into a season full of unknowns—new players, a new system, and an always-brutal Big 12 schedule—Marshall is certain of one thing: his team's abilities. He knows they have depth, confident that no matter who steps onto the field, the level of performance won’t drop.

"We have a strong first, second, and third group. And that's big and that's key. There's no layoff from anyone, no break, and that goes for all our defense."

Braeden MarshallOn the defense's strengths

With that level of trust and togetherness, the Knights’ defense is poised to be not only solid but a real problem for opposing offenses all season long. Feeling more connected to his team than ever, Marshall is ready for the challenge of game situations, knowing it’s how they handle difficult moments that will determine whether they remain a good team or become a great one.

"I'm ready to test how we respond to adversity. There's going to be adversity throughout the whole season, but it's the way we respond and how we just stay together that matters."

Braeden MarshallOn what he is looking forward to in game one

As the clock ticks down to game one, Marshall is focused on one thing: keeping the group together. Because for him it’s about more than just winning; It’s about doing right by the city he grew up in, it's about lifting up the guys beside him, and about making sure the team that plays in Orlando reflects the pride of the people who live there.
