Fall Camp Spotlight: Chris Domercant

by Aiden Kocol

ORLANDO - UCF football’s receiver room is full of fresh faces. With few returning contributors, the group has something to prove. And Chris Domercant, an experienced veteran but new to the program, brings both humility and hunger.

"Underdogs."

_______________

When asked to describe this year’s football team in just a single word, Domercant was quick to respond, but he doesn’t mind being the underdog; in fact, he thrives on it.

Long before he arrived in Orlando to suit up in black and gold, Domercant was a fullback in a Wing-T offense, grinding through cold Massachusetts high school football games with little fanfare and even fewer offers.

"Out of high school, I wasn't a highly recruited guy. I went to a small school up in Massachusetts, and it's tough to get recruited from there."

Nonetheless, Domercant had both the skills and work ethic to play at the next level and was vying for an opportunity to prove it. Starting at Stonehill, a Division II-level college, he showed up with his head down, ready to work. And work he did. In his first season alone, he cracked 800 receiving yards and was second on the squad in recorded touchdowns with nine.

Seeing both his potential on the field and his determination to grow, Chattanooga presented Domercant with a chance to break into the Division I level during the 2024 season. An opportunity well-earned, Domercant took the leap to the FCS, where he posted 640 reception yards on the season.

Domercant’s football résumé quickly grew into one of adaptability and persistence. He’s played nearly every offensive skill position, including fullback, outside and slot receiver, even stepping into special teams roles. He credits his early coaches for instilling the discipline and drive that fueled his rise through the ranks.

"Shout out to my high school coaches, I feel like that's the reason why I was able to make it this far. They established in me early that you need to have a work ethic and discipline to be able to play at the level I'm at."

But as he developed, so did his ambitions. The Power Four was calling.

So when UCF came knocking, Domercant didn’t hesitate. He had never even been to Florida before his visit, but the moment he touched down, he knew. And after doing extensive research on Scott Frost and his staff, he was sold. Frost’s reputation, offensive philosophy, and attention to detail aligned perfectly with Domercant’s own football values.

"Coach Frost is very nitpicky on what he wants to see from each side of the football and little details that people might not think are important, but all the details matter. Even things like keeping the locker room clean, because if you can't trust someone to do the small stuff off the field, you can't trust them to do it all on the field."

Now immersed in Frost’s fast-paced, high-efficiency offensive system, Domercant is finding his rhythm not just at one position, but across the board.

"They’ve had me learning all positions so I could fill in as needed. I want to help the team wherever they see fit, so whatever they need me to do, I'm going to do it."

His strength? Football IQ and speed. He’s a long-strider with a deep understanding of where he needs to be within the scheme, a valuable asset in an offense that demands tempo and precision. And Domercant’s speed might shine even brighter on special teams. With previous kick return experience at Stonehill, he’s now part of a return group at UCF that includes explosive talents like Dwayne Thomas and Jaden Nixon. A group that, although new to many UCF fans, brings a dynamic mix of versatility and fiery intensity that's primed to outpace and dismantle opposing defenses.

Though he hasn’t played a single down in a UCF uniform yet, Domercant already feels the excitement of stepping onto the stage he’s worked toward since early middle school, when he first started playing football. During a recent scrimmage, he got his first opportunity to step onto a Power Four Field in one of college football’s most raucous environments: the Bounce House

"It was crazy. That was my first time being on the field, and it was surreal even with no fans in there. It's a dream getting to play in those types of atmospheres, especially in the Big 12"

Until then, it’s back to work mastering the playbook, refining his blocking, syncing with quarterbacks, and embracing every rep in fall camp.

Because Domercant knows the game doesn’t owe him anything, every opportunity he's earned has come from perseverance, adaptability, and doing the little things right.
