Softball Signs Transfer OF/P Carley Jo Penner

ORLANDO – The UCF softball team has announced its first addition from the transfer portal following the conclusion of the 2025 spring campaign, adding rising senior outfielder/pitcher Carley Jo Penner from Kent State.

Penner, a native of Wintersville, Ohio, spent the first three years of her collegiate career with the Golden Flashes from 2023-25, slashing a combined .254/.306/.287 in 123 career games, including 104 starts, accompanied by 53 runs scored, nine doubles, one triple, 95 total bases, 21 walks, 17 stolen bases and 27 RBI.

“Definitely the culture of the program. The coaching staff brings in a very strong winning attitude and upholds the standard of excellence on and off the field every day. The campus blew my mind too. Talking to a few of the other girls, I knew this was the place to be.”

After seeing limited action throughout her freshman 2023 slate, appearing in 23 games and going 4-for-10 with one double and three runs scored, Penner enjoyed a breakout 2024 season during which she hit .295/.323/.301 (46-for-156) in 49 games as an everyday starter.

She hit safely in eight of her first nine games of the season Feb. 8-25, going 10-for-32 with six RBI in that span, and would finish the year with 12 multi-hit games.

“With me having one year left, all four of their backgrounds and how much of the game they know is insane,” Penner said of the Knights’ coaching staff. “Coach Noah (Sanders) really sold me with the hitting aspect, I really wanted to develop my game and reach my full potential offensively, and I feel like all of them have so much useful knowledge.”

Appearing in and starting 51 games throughout the 2025 season, Penner set single-season career-highs in doubles (7), walks (15) and RBI (16), and matched her previous season-high in runs scored (25) while also hitting her first career triple.

In Kent State’s Feb. 21 contest against Michigan, one of UCF’s eventual three NCAA Austin Regional opponents, Penner went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, and later produced another multi-hit game with a run scored against North Carolina in Chapel Hill March 2.

“I’m really excited, I feel like the Big 12 is going to challenge me not just physically but also mentally, and that’s the thing I was looking for in my last year. In addition to winning a championship with UCF.”

Prior to her collegiate career, Penner garnered First Team All-State and OVAC Player of the Year honors for her efforts throughout her senior season at Indian Creek High School, hitting .663 with a school single-season record 48 stolen bases. She also served as National Honors Society Vice President for two years.

During her time in Orlando, Penner will study medical sales and interdisciplinary studies.
