ORLANDO – Former UCF men’s golfer, Luis Carrera, from Mexico City, Mexico won the Sunshine Tour this past week in South Africa.
Carrera opened the tournament strong, firing a 66 (-5) in the first round followed by a 69 (-2) and 68 (-3) before cranking up the heat in the final round with an impressive 61 (-10). The Mexico City native concluded the week with a score of 264 (-20) to become the Sunshine Tour Champion.

During the first round of the tournament, Carrera led the round off with a birdie and picked up five more along the day. A strong showing going bogey-free through 17 holes, ending the round in third place.
In the second round, the UCF alum was setback a little carding a 69 with four birdies and landed in ninth place. Carrera picked it up in the third round jumping four spots in the leaderboard, recording four birdies in a row from hole No. 13 to 16.
Heading into the fourth and final round, Carrera five strokes behind first-place leader, Thomas Spreadborough. He picked up the pace to tally the best 18-hole score throughout the field with a 61 (-10). Kicking off the final 18 with an eagle and a birdie put Carrera in a good spot. He proceeded to snag nine birdies throughout the round and went bogey-free on the back nine.
