Softball Earns 2-1 Walk-Off Win over FGCU

by Ryan Ladika

ORLANDO – Though she was responsible for driving in both of the UCF softball team’s runs in its latest win, left fielder Stormy Kotzelnick ensured the events leading up to her walk-off single would not be forgotten.

A seventh-inning leadoff single in true freshman Kendall Yarnell’s second at-bat off the bench. A crucial, well-executed two-strike bunt by sophomore Kiley Strott. Seven innings of one-run ball by Isabella Vega, Yessenia Lopez and Kaitlyn Felton.

Though the key hit was Kotzelnick’s, UCF’s Friday night 2-1 walk-off win over FGCU wouldn’t have been possible without her teammates’ contributions.

“I want to talk about Kiley. I would not have been in that position without her being able to get that bunt down, especially with two strikes; that takes a lot of guts. I’m proud of her helping me get up there. I knew I just had to get something through the infield so I could get my team a win.”

The Black and Gold’s Friday showing marked their second walk-off win of the season, joining their dramatic 6-5, eight-inning comeback over No. 15 Missouri Feb. 11, and with 10 wins in their first 16 games are off to their best 16-game start to a season since the 2021 Knights went 13-3 through their first 16 contests.

With the score deadlocked at one run apiece in the home half of the final frame, Yarnell kickstarted UCF’s offense with a well-placed ground ball through the middle of the infield. Sierra Humphreys’ grounder that followed was misplayed by the Eagles defense to put two runners on for Strott, who remained calm and collected after failing on her first two bunt tries.

The catcher accomplished her mission on her third attempt, setting the stage for Kotzelnick’s line drive single to left field that represented the first walk-off hit of her collegiate career and her second RBI of the game.

“Super proud of them and how they were able to hold it down for us. They showed a lot of maturity keeping it together and having confidence in the circle. They were able to put us on their back and bring us through that game, and I’m thankful that we were able to repay the favor in the end.”

The Eagles scored their lone run of the game in the top of the first inning on an RBI single to left field, but the Vega, Lopez and Felton tandem quieted the visitors throughout the evening’s final six frames.

Vega, making her third start of the season and sixth appearance, fanned three Eagles in the top of the first en route to limiting the damage to a single score.

She bounced back with three consecutive groundouts in the second, and worked around a pair of Knights defensive errors in the third thanks in part to Kotzelnick’s 7-5 assist in throwing out an FGCU runner at third base to end the inning.

“She started us off very well. She’s doing a great job mixing speeds, keeping the hitters off-balance, and now I just want to see her work ahead a little bit more.”

Head coach Cindy Ball-Maloneon Vega

UCF broke through with its equalizer in the home half of the third when Kotzelnick singled home Humphreys, who led off the frame with her second single of the evening. The redshirt senior, in driving in both UCF runs, recorded her third multi-RBI game of the year, joining her two runs batted in against NC State Feb. 7 and No. 15 Missouri Feb. 11.

After the Eagles put their leadoff batter on in the fourth, Ball-Malone opted for Lopez, who worked around the baserunner with her first strikeout of the evening and Strott’s pinpoint throw to erase the runner attempting to steal second.

Lopez whiffed two more in a perfect fifth, and in the sixth fanned one more while dancing around a one-out single.

FGCU punched back in the top of the seventh, putting two more runners on base via an infield single and a walk, and Ball-Malone again called to her bullpen, bringing in her veteran senior who just the night before tossed her first career no-hitter.

Kaitlyn Felton entered amid a flurry of defensive changes and got the one she was tasked with facing, inducing an inning-ending flyout to Taylor Kittleman in center field just moments before UCF’s late game-winning rally.

Upon the game’s conclusion, Lopez and Vega combined for 6.2 innings of work, yielding just one run on four hits with eight strikeouts, three from Vega and five from Lopez. The latter enters Saturday’s action as her team’s leader in punchouts, having totaled 36 through her first nine NCAA appearances.

“She’s gathering a lot of information, and it’s been fun to call her games because she’s been able to throw different pitches at different times,” Ball-Malone continued. “It’s been nice to see her do that as we go, and learn with the hitters. We do match up our pitchers to certain teams, but the really good pitchers are able to face any type of hitter. She’s becoming that.”
