No. 20 Women's Tennis Remains Unbeaten with Victory over FIU

ORLANDO - The No. 20 UCF women’s tennis team put on a show in its first space game of the season, sweeping FIU 4-1 on Sunday at the USTA National Campus.

The win extends the Knights’ perfect start this year to four straight wins. Two Knights added to their undefeated record so far this season, as Aya El Aouni and Jade Psonka each walked away victorious from their singles match.

Two pairings recorded their first wins as teammates for UCF in doubles play. El Aouni and Olivia Lincer launched the Knights to a dominant start, finishing 6-1 on court one. Olivia Bergler and Sophia Biolay followed shortly with another 6-1 win of their own on court two. With the one-point advantage secured, Hannah Rylatt and Psonka went unfinished on court three after trailing in their match 4-2.

A rain delay lasting over an hour interrupted singles play as the second sets were beginning to take off. With the courts dried up, it was all systems go for the Citronauts to pick up where they left off. Court three was the first to drop, as Biolay bested FIU’s Valery Gynina in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. El Aouni put the victory within reach for UCF, winning her court-two bout against Oyinlomo Quadre, 6-2, 6-2.

FIU fired back to make it 3-1 after Bergler fell to Katerina Mandelikova on court four, 6-4, 6-1. In the end, it was Psonka who pushed the Knights past the Panthers, taking the clincher on court five against Anja Draskovic, 7-6, 6-0

Lincer was leading in her third set against Ekaterina Khairutdinova before their match went unfinished, 6-2, 4-6, 5-2. Hannah Rylatt was beginning her third set after dropping her second against Petja Drame when her match also went unfinished, 6-2, 4-6.

The Knights will now travel to Tampa next weekend to take on rivals USF on February 9th at noon.
