No. 19 Men's Soccer Downs Mercer, 3-1, in Season-Opener

ORLANDO – “This is a group that is so connected. They enjoy being around each other and it’s fun to be a part of.”

No moment fulfilled head coach Scott Calabrese’s words more than the seconds succeeding senior forward Emmanuel Bam’s first goal of the new season, and the No. 19 UCF men’s soccer team’s third goal of the evening.

Immediately following a well-executed give-and-go-style play by Bam and sophomore midfielder Yanis Belatrache that resulted in a slick left-footed score by the former, Bam’s teammates lifted him on their shoulders as the senior let loose a pair of jubilant fist pumps.

The tally extended the 19th-ranked Knights’ (1-0-0) advantage to three goals in the squad’s eventual 3-1 victory over the visiting Mercer Bears (0-1-0) at the UCF Soccer Complex Thursday evening, a convincing victory that lifted the lid on the squad’s second season as members of the Sun Belt Conference this fall.

“I was a bit mad when I missed a chance in the first half. I had to come out and be more decisive to score (in the second half). All in all, I was happy, I was able to assist and score tonight.”

Emmanuel BamSenior Forward

Bam’s 51st-minute score punctuated a strong debut by the 2024 Knights’ attacking scheme, one that saw the Black and Gold outshoot the Bears 14-6 overall, as well as 6-3 in tries on target. It was fitting that the offensive contributor who enters the new year with the longest tenure in Orlando, fifth year senior Lucca Dourado, ignited the scoring early with UCF’s first goal of the year.

A trio of single touch passes by Bam and junior forward Clarence Awoudor advanced the ball to the waiting feet of Dourado just outside the six-yard box. With a fourth quick touch by his right foot, the forward sent an accurate strike over Mercer goalkeeper to push the Knights out to a one-goal advantage in the 17th minute of action.

The tally represented not only Dourado’s first of the new slate, but also the 38th of his career, leaving the São Paulo, Brazil, native two shy of becoming the sixth in program history to score 40 goals in a UCF kit.

“It feels good. First win of the season for us and we looked like a family. Everybody’s good, everybody’s confident, and it was a great night for us. It was a great pass from Bam, and I’m happy for the finish.”

Lucca DouradoFifth Year Forward

Just over five minutes later, fellow fifth year Anderson Rosa sent a long pass toward the Bears goal from near halfway to midfield. A Mercer defender tangled with Knights fifth year defender Jonas Fritschi, who drew not only a Bears foul, but an awarded penalty kick as a result as well.

Awoudor, the reigning Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year, was tasked by Calabrese to handle the job, and he did so with ease, swatting the ball inside the left goalpost to double UCF’s advantage in the 22nd minute on his first career penalty kick attempt.

“It’s a relief to get the first win,” Calabrese added. “It feels good, you build some confidence in that, in the way we played. In different parts of the game, you can take away a lot of positives from that, and there are things that we can always do better. But it feels good to get the first one.”

In earning their second consecutive season-opening victory, UCF played airtight defense on the other end for the majority of the evening as well, yielding only the late Bears score in the 89th minute of action on three total shots on goal.

Knights junior netminder Juanvi Muñoz represented the team’s needed steady presence between the posts from the game’s opening whistle, making a pair of key saves in the match’s duration, including a diving stop with his right hand to thwart a second-half Bears chance with just under 22 minutes to play.

In allowing only one score Thursday, Muñoz, who entered the match in control of 10th place on the Knights’ all-time goals against average list with a career mark of 1.29, surrendered one or fewer goals for the 18th time in 29 career appearances spanning his two-plus year career.

“There is a lot of belief in the team, clearly in the way we came out,” Calabrese continued. “This will add to that belief. Now we have another challenge in Seattle, a top 25 ranked team. We’re going to do everything we can to recover physically to be ready for what will be another difficult challenge.”
