ORLANDO – UCF women’s golfer Molly Smith turned in a stellar first day at the UCF Challenge held at Eagle Creek Country Club on Saturday, as the freshman carded a score of 68 (-4) to tie for third place following the first round of play.
As a team, the Knights are tied for seventh with a score of 290 (+2), just three strokes shy of the top-five teams in a stacked field.
Smith opened the day with three birdies on the front nine, followed by another three on the back nine.
Brittany Shin was even through the first nine holes and tallied three birdies on the back nine going back-to-back on holes No. 13 and 14. Shin ended the day with a 72 (E).
Jess Baker and Katie Poots both fired scores of 75 (+3). Baker carded four birdies, while Poots snagged one on hole No. 13.
Competing as an individual, Emma Baier finished the day with a 77 (+5) with back-to-back birdies on holes one and two.
Camille Banzet rounded the day out with an 80 (+8).
UCF will tee off in the second round of the UCF Challenge Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. The Knights are paired with Northwestern and UNCW.
