UCF Hall of Famer Butera Named to White Sox Coaching Staff

by James Warnick

CHICAGO – UCF Hall of Famer and former Major League Baseball catcher Drew Butera has been named the catching coach for the Chicago White Sox for the 2024 campaign.

Butera, who spent 2022-23 on staff for the Los Angeles Angels, will join White Sox manager Pedro Grifol’s coaching staff in 2024. Butera was a standout catcher for the Knights from 2003-05 and went on to play 12 years in the Major Leagues, playing for the Twins, Dodgers, Angels, Royals and Rockies. He was a fifth-round draft pick of the Mets and won a World Championship in 2015 with the Kansas City Royals. He was one of only five players in MLB history to catch a no-hitter in both the American League (Francisco Liriano with the Twins in 2011) and the National League (Josh Beckett with the Dodgers in 2014).

Butera was inducted into the UCF Hall of Fame in 2019 and is the Knights’ all-time career record-holder in runners caught stealing, as he mowed down 63 would-be base stealers during his career.
