ORLANDO –
After wrapping up their stellar UCF careers at the NCAA Regionals, former Knights men's golf standouts Luis Carrera and Johnny Travale are set to make their professional debuts at the RBC Canadian Open held this week in the Oakdale Golf and Country Club in Toronto, Ontario.

The 112th edition of the event will feature 156 of the world's best players. Carrera will tee off from hole 10 at 9:01 a.m. ET along with Canadian Drew Nesbitt and American Peter Kuest. Travale tees off at 9:12 a.m. also from No. 10 with fellow Canadians Daniel Kim and Ben Silverman.

Carrera earned an exemption into the field by winning the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship held in Vancouver in August 2022. Travale received a sponsor exemption to participate in the open.

Played annually since its inception in 1904, except during World War I, World War II, and cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the RBC Canadian Open is the third oldest continuously running tournament on the PGA TOUR, after The Open Championship and the U.S. Open.

As a national open, the event had a special status in the era before the professional tour system became dominant in golf.

The opening ceremonies for the 2023 RBC Canadian Open will begin at 6:30 a.m. and will include a blessing of the land, National Anthem, and a fly over by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds. The opening ceremonies will conclude with a ceremonial tee shot from Wilf Homenuik. During his career, Homenuik won eight international professional titles, two Canadian Professional Golfer Association (CPGA) championships, two CPGA Match Play Championships for the Millar Trophy and eleven provincial titles. Nine of the 27 holes at Oakdale Golf and Country Club are named after the club's long-time teaching professional, known as the Homenuik nine. Homenuik was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 2005.

Carrera led the Knights during the 2022-23 season with a 71.21 scoring average and finished among the top 15 in six tournaments. He opened the season by winning the individual title at the Hartford Hawks Invitational with a 16-under-par 200, which tied the program record for the lowest 54-hole score by an individual.

The Mexico City, Mexico, native tallied 16 rounds under par, headlined by a 63 (-9) in the second round of the Hartford Hawks Invitational to tie the program record. Carrera was a unanimous American Athletic All-Conference Selection.

Travale turned in a 71.39 scoring average in his final season in the Black and Gold, finishing among the top 12 in five tournaments. He carded his best finish of the season at the Hartford Hawks Invitational, tying for second with an 11-under-par 205. Travale also recorded a top-five finish at the prestigious Blessings Intercollegiate with a 54-hole score of 214 (-2).

Hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Travale became only the third UCF golfer to claim three consecutive American Athletic All-Conference honors joining Bobby Bai and Manuel Elvira.
