ORLANDO - After a hot start to the 2023 spring season, two Knights have earned a spot on the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association Singles and Doubles Rankings of the year. Marie Mattel continues to hold a spot in the Singles Rankings, checking in at No. 48. The Knights duo of Mattel and Sophia Biolay also remain on the Doubles Rankings, coming in at No. 34.
Mattel kicked off the spring season strong, securing back-to-back victories in her first two singles matches against Stetson and No. 19 Arizona State. Mattel faced tough competition against the Sun Devils, going up against No. 54 Giulia Morlet, but managed to defeat her by a score of 6-2, 7-5. Mattel's clutch victory played a critical role in the Black and Gold's upset against ASU. After an outstanding performance in matches against Arizona State and No. 15 Auburn during the ITA Kickoff Weekend, Mattel named the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the fourth time in her career on Jan. 31.
Despite not yet playing in a match as a doubles tandem this spring, Biolay and Mattel have maintained a spot in the doubles poll. The duo but ended the fall season with an incredible performance at the UNF Fall Invite, leading to their first appearance on the ITA rankings. The duo went undefeated with a 3-0 record, being named champions of the invite.
