LAS VEGAS – As one of six teams under par on the day, the UCF men's golf team turned in a stellar second round on Monday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate to end the day three under with a 285 team score. Headlined by 14 birdies and an eagle, the Knights improved five spots on the team leaderboard, leaping three ranked teams to sit five over following the first two rounds.
Luis Carrera had the best score of day for an individual in the field with a 66 (-6) to tie his career low for a round. The Mexico City, Mexico, native was two under on the back nine with three birdies and shot an impressive four under on the front nine with two birdies and an eagle on No. 9. Carrera's six under par topped Oklahoma's Patrick Welch and Illinois' Tommy Kuhl for the low score on the day by one stroke.
Carrera's remarkable performance helped the fifth year move into the top 10 on the player leaderboard, as he is now tied for eighth with a 139 (-8) after the first two rounds.
Egor Eroshenko shot a 71 (-1) after an even back nine and one under on the front nine as the Knights had a pair of golfers end the day under par. He birdied hole No. 15 and 16 before making the turn and carding a birdie on a par-3 on hole No. 2.
Markus Braadlie and Chase Haygood were both two over par with a 74 in the second round with both players dropping in a pair of birdies. They were each two over on the back nine and even on the front nine.
Tom Stephens fired a 78 (+6) following a tough back nine, but he responded with a 37 (+1) on the front nine to sit nine over after the first two rounds.
No. 16 Texas carded the best team score of the day with an 11-under-par 277, while seventh-ranked Illinois was seven under with a 281. Oklahoma, the nation's ninth-ranked team, was five under with a 283, while No. 4 North Carolina and UCF recorded a three under (285) and No. 14 Pepperdine shot a two 286 (-2).
UCF will tee off from hole No. 10 starting at 12:40 p.m. ET/9:40 a.m. PT on Tuesday to conclude play in the Southern Highlands Collegiate hosted by UNLV.
