ORLANDO – After a busy week filled with ranked wins, UCF's Marie Mattel has been named the American Athletic Conference's Women's Tennis Player of the Week. The award is the second of the season for Mattel and the fifth of her career.
Mattel jumped up 17 spots in the ITA Singles Rankings to No. 31 after her perfect singles week at No. 1 singles. This ranking ties Valeriya Zeleva for 10th-highest ranked singles player in program history.
In the match against FIU on Tuesday, Feb. 14, Mattel and doubles partner Noel Saidenova took down the 44th-ranked tandem on court one to help secure the doubles point. Sticking with court one for singles, she earned the first singles point of the match with a dominating victory in straight sets.
Traveling to No. 14 Vanderbilt on Friday, Feb. 17, Mattel upset No. 34 Celia-Belle Mohr in straight sets as well, giving the Knights their lone point in the match. She earned another ranked win on Sunday against No. 24 Tennessee, defeating No. 65 Elza Tomase quickly and efficiently 6-3, 6-2 to improve her singles record to 5-1 for the 2023 spring season.
UP NEXT
The Knights return home for a busy weekend, facing off against No. 65 TCU on Friday, Feb. 24 and No. 25 Pepperdine on Sunday, Feb. 26. Both matches will be held at USTA National Campus with free admission.
