ORLANDO – After another strong weekend, UCF's Marie Mattel has been named the American Athletic Conference's Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The honor marks Mattel's fourth of her career and the first for the Knights this season.
Mattel, ranked No. 47 in ITA Singles, was instrumental in the Knights upset against No. 19 Arizona State 4-2 during the ITA Kickoff Weekend. She opened the weekend by defeating 69th-ranked Guilia Morlet 6-2, 7-5. In doubles, Mattel and her partner Noel Saidenova went unfinished 4-4 against No. 9 Patricija Spaka and Domenika Turkovic.
After helping the Knights advance to the championship match against No. 15 Auburn, Mattel won the first set over No. 43 Ariana Arseneault 7-6 (7) before it went unfinished when the match was clinched.
UP NEXT
The Knights will return home this Sunday, Feb. 5, when they take on LSU at the USTA National Campus. The 3 p.m. match will have free admission, as well as a live stream of all the courts.
