UCF’s Carrera Wins Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Headlined by three rounds under par, UCF men's golfer Luis Carrera is the 117th Canadian Men's Amateur Champion. Carrera fired a four-day total 274 to finish two strokes ahead of the second-place finisher at Point Grey Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, Canada.

"It feels amazing," said Carrera following the victory to Golf Canada in an interview. "I've worked really hard for events and to finally see the results and to win such a great event, it feels amazing. It's such an honor and I'm so happy to do it."

Carrera closed out the win on Thursday with a 66 (-5), the best score of any golfer in the fourth round. He opened the round with an eagle on hole No. 1 before recording three birdies on the back nine to claim the title by two strokes. The UCF senior fired a 67 (-4) on Wednesday with seven birdies and a 68 (-3) on Tuesday, highlighted by four birdies. After carding a 73 (+2) in the opening round, Carrera came on strong during the week to rise to the top of the leaderboard.

When Carrera's name is etched into the prestigious Earl Grey Cup, he'll join a list of notable Canadian Men's Amateur Champions including PGA TOUR winner and Olympian Mackenzie Hughes (2011-12), PGA TOUR winner Nick Taylor (2007), Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Moe Norman (1955-56) and Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Doug Roxburgh (1972, 1974, 1982, 1988) who was also in the field this week.

Along with the title, Carrera has earned an exemption into the 2023 RBC Canadian Open at Oakdale Golf & Country Club, as well as the 2022 U.S. Amateur Championship held August 15-22 in Paramus, New Jersey, where he will join fellow Knights golfer Egor Eroshenko. This was his first time competing in the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship, presented by BDO.
