ORLANDO – UCF junior and No. 126 ranked individual Marie Mattel saw her season come to a close in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship Monday in Champaign, Illinois after falling to Stanford's No 26 Connie Ma in consecutive sets.
Mattel dropped the first set 7-5 before her season came to an end with a 6-3 loss in set two. Ma will go on to face Florida's McCartney Kessler, who is ranked No. 12 overall. To view the full bracket, click here.
Mattel made her first appearance on The American's All-Conference Team this year after an incredible season where she helped lead the Knights to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Le Plessis-Bouchard, France native was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week three times during the 2022 campaign and was 13-6 overall.
The junior earned an automatic bid into the NCAA singles championship as she was the highest ranked player in The American at the conclusion of the regular season. Before her loss to Ma on Monday, she had won seven straight matches.
