Mattel Earns Second AAC Player of the Week Honor

ORLANDO, Fla. – After an outstanding three-match weekend and clinching the upset over No. 9 Oklahoma State, Marie Mattel was named the American Athletic Conference's Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

This marks Mattel's second honor of the season and in her career and is the fourth recognition for the Knights this season.

Mattel went undefeated in singles on court four, including two clinchers and one over a higher-ranked opponent. The junior also went undefeated in doubles with a pair of wins on court one with teammate Evgeniya Levashova, taking down a higher-ranked opponent.

After the weekend, Mattel extended her singles win streak to five while her and Levashova also extended to a five-match win streak in doubles.

The Le Plesses-Bouchard, France native, opened the weekend, helping UCF sweep BYU. She earned a quick 6-1, 6-3 decision in singles over Emilee Astle while her doubles match went unfinished at four all.

Despite the quick turnaround with a match against Harvard the following day, Mattel continued her momentum with a big 6-1 win in doubles with Levashova over the Crimson and clinched the 4-1 match win for the Knights after a 6-1, 7-5 win in singles.

UCF then faced the top-10 team of No. 9 Oklahoma State and went on to give the Cowgirls just their second loss of the season.

No. 57 Mattel and Levashova stunned No. 38 Sawangkaew and Zerulo after a 6-2 win on court one in doubles.

No. 100 Mattel then took on No. 82 Oona Orpana in singles. The match was neck and neck the entire way through. Mattel dropped the first set in an extra-long tiebreak, 6-7(9), but came back to take the second set in extra games, 7-5. The match was tied three all and came down to their court. But Mattel came out victorious, getting the upset and clinching the match with a 6-4 third set win.

Mattel has now clinched four matches this season.
