ORLANDO, Fla. – After a strong weekend with multiple upsets, Marie Mattel was named the American Athletic Conference's Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The honor marks Mattel's first of her career and the second for the Knights this season.
Mattel won three of her four matches over the weekend, over highly-ranked teams.
The junior began her outstanding weekend on Friday, February 25 against No. 2 Oklahoma. Mattel teamed up with Evgeniya Levashova in doubles, taking on the nation's No. 4 doubles duo of Ivana Corley and Carmen Corley. The Knights put up a strong fight and never gave up, but fell, 6-3, on court one.
Mattel got her revenge in singles as she earned the upset over No. 34 Carmen Corley in a comeback win with a score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, one court three. This helped the Knights get their first point on the board.
The Le Plessis-Bouchard, France native carried this momentum into Sunday's match as she went undefeated in a huge sweep over No. 17 Baylor. Mattel partnered up with Levashova once again in doubles and the duo took down the nation's No. 1 doubles team of Mel Krywoj and Alicia Herrero by a score of 6-3 on court one, helping the Knights clinch the doubles point.
Mattel then completed the weekend with a two-set match win, 6-3, 7-5, over Mel Krywoj on court three in singles to not only clinch the match for the Knights but also clinch the clean sweep, 4-0.
