ORLANDO – The UCF women's basketball team picked up its fourth win in a row with a 71-57 victory over Memphis in Addition Financial Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Following a similar pattern, UCF (16-3, 8-1 AAC) fell behind out of the gate as Memphis (13-7, 4-5 AAC) jumped out to a 7-0 start in the first two minutes. The Knights responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead with 2:21 left in the frame and were ahead 17-15 at the end of the first period.
The Black and Gold held the Tigers to just five points in the second quarter, adding 12 points of their own to build up a 29-20 lead at halftime. UCF extended its lead to double figures in the third period and held a 50-39 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Tigers made the game interesting in the fourth, cutting UCF's lead to single digits, 62-56, but Diamond Battles sank 7 of her 8 free throw attempts down the stretch. Tay Sanders secured the double-digit victory with a pair at the charity stripe.
Diamond Battles led all scorers with a career-high 25 points, hitting a career-best 10 free throws. She also had four assists and three steals.
Three Knights joined Battles in double figures. Brittney Smith posted her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Masseny Kaba added 13 points and Tay Sanders chipped in 11 points. Kaba and Sanders each pulled down eight rebounds and Kaba had a pair of blocks. Alisha Lewis joined
UCF heads out for a two-game road swing, making the trip to Houston for a midweek contest against the Cougars before heading to Tampa for the second round of the War on I-4 against South Florida.
