ORLANDO – For the second time this season, UCF freshman Darius Johnson has been named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week after the first-year guard had a career week to help the Knights to a 2-1 record, including wins over Tulsa and ECU at home.
Johnson averaged 11.3 points per game in the trio of wins. The freshman had 14 points in a win over Tulsa on Monday, Feb. 14 and grabbed at least five rebounds and dished out at least five assists in all three contests last week.
Johnson drained five shots from 3-point range over the week, shooting 38.5 percent from deep in three games. The freshman is third on the team with 10.5 points per game in AAC action this season and is second on the Knights with 62 total assists on the year.
It marks the first time a UCF player has earned multiple Rookie of the Week honors from The American since Isaiah Adams picked up the award three times as a freshman during the 2020-21 season.
UCF returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 23 as the Knights host Cincinnati in their last regular season home game of the year. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET and UCF's seniors will be honored ahead of the game.
With Johnson's help, the Knights moved up to 16-9 overall and 8-7 in league play. UCF sits in sixth place in the AAC standings heading into Wednesday's game against the Bearcats.
