ORLANDO, Fla. – The UCF softball team is set for its first midweek matchup of the 2022 season, hosting Liberty on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The Knights began the year with a bang, going 3-1 at The CFX Classic this past weekend. Opening night saw the Black and Gold beat No. 12 Georgia 7-6 in extra innings, thanks to a Shannon Doherty blast down the left field line in the eighth. The Plex erupted, and Doherty's excitement showed, tossing her signature bat flip and pumping up the bench on her way around the bases. The moment was posted on social media and went viral, receiving over 934,000 views. UCF earned two more wins on Saturday, beating Fresno State and Longwood by a collective score of 15-2 with dominating pitching performances by Kaitlyn Felton and Gianna Mancha. The only blemish on the weekend came on Friday against Minnesota, as the Knights were edged by the Golden Gophers 3-1.
Jada Cody played a huge role in opening weekend, batting .500 (6-for-12) while collecting 8 RBI. She collectively hit for the cycle between Saturday's two games, homering and smacking a double in the game against Fresno State. Her performance earned her a trip to the American Athletic Conference's honor roll.
New rankings for the NFCA, USA Softball and Softball America polls have yet to be released and are scheduled to be unveiled tomorrow. UCF jumped into the D1 Softball Top 25 after this week, checking in at No. 24.
Liberty began the season at No. 24 in the NFCA Top 25 but have since gone 0-4. They opened the campaign with a 7-0 loss to Iowa, followed by three losses to ranked opponents. They were narrowly edged by No. 19 Kentucky 3-1 before falling to No. 23 Northwestern 8-2. The Flames nearly mounted a comeback against No. 9 Missouri their last time out, but fell short, losing 6-5. Liberty has a short trip over from Leesburg, where they opened the season at the Northern Lights/Southern Nights Invitational.
