GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Trey Hilderbrand and JC Roddick of the UCF men's tennis team both advanced to the singles main draw elite eight at ITA Southeast Regionals in Gainesville, Florida.
The Knights opened the day going three-for-three in the second round of the singles main draw. Trey Hilderbrand defeated Erik Grevelius from Georgia by a score of 6-3, 6-3 while JC Roddick earned a huge upset over No. 85 Loris Pourray from Florida State, playing as the No. 9 seed in the tournament, with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Bogdan Pavel also picked up a win over Miguel Perez Pena from Georgia in 7-6(2), 6-2. The three Knights moved on to the sweet sixteen later in the day.
Hilderbrand and Roddick then both earned big wins in the sweet sixteen. Hilderbrand topped Andreja Petrovic from Florida State in three sets. Hilderbrand dropped the first set, 4-6, but came back to edge out Petrovic in the final two sets, 7-6(4) and 7-5. Roddick was able to secure the win in two sets over his opponent, Chopra, from Georgia Tech with a score of 6-4, 6-4. With these wins, Hilderbrand and Roddick move on to the elite eight tomorrow.
Pavel also competed in the sweet sixteen, facing Alvaro Fernandez Horta from FAU, but was slightly edged out in the first set and was unable to get the second as he fell by a score of 7-6(6), 6-2.
A pair of Knights then played in the singles backdraw. Cooper White put up a fight against Britton Johnston from Georgia but fell in the first round in 6-3, 4-6, 10-6. Bryan Triana moved on straight to the second round due to a walkover but could not hold on to Hamish Stewart from Georiga as he fell in two sets, 6-2, 7-5.
In the sole doubles action of the day, Lleyton Cronje and Hilderbrand competed in the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw. The pair faced Andres Andrade and Mattias Siimar from Florida, who was playing as the No. 6 seed in the tournament. The Knights kept it close, but were unable get the win as they fell 8-6.
