GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The UCF men's tennis team had success on the first day of the main draw of doubles and singles at ITA Southeast Regionals in Gainesville, Florida.
In the doubles main draw, Lleyton Cronje and Trey Hilderbrand advanced to the quarterfinals after going undefeated on the day. The duo first picked up a win over Carles Sarrio and Hunter Robbins from FAU with a score of 8-6 in the first round before dominating the second round in an 8-1 win over the No. 4 seed in the tournament, Hamish Stewart and Philip Henning from Georgia. They will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Cooper White and Bryan Triana teamed up to defeat Sebastian Arcila and Andreja Petrovic from Florida State by a score of 8-5. The tandem moved on to the second round where they saw the likes of the No. 6 seed in the tournament, Andres Andrade and Mattias Siimar, from Florida, but fell 8-1.
Also playing in doubles was JC Roddick and Bogdan Pavel. The pair took on the No. 8 doubles team and No. 1 tournament seed of Marcus McDaniel and Andres Marin from Georgia Tech in the opening round. The Knights had some good looks, but ultimately feel 8-3.
In the first round of the singles main draw, the Knights earned three wins to advance to the second round on Saturday.
Bogdan Pavel defeated Harvey Maughan from Georgia State in a retired match, 6-4, 6-5. JC Roddick got the win over Juan Lopez from Florida Gulf Coast in a quick 6-2, 6-2 decision.
Playing as the No. 14 seed in the tournament, Trey Hilderbrand took on Andrei Duarte from Georgia State. After dropping a tight first set, 6-7(1), Hilderbrand battled back to take the close second set, 7-5, before closing the third set with east, 6-0.
Cooper White opened up play by taking on No. 14 Andres Andrade from Florida, who was also the No. 1 seed in the tournament. White fell by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Cronje had to retire his match against Alvaro Fernandez Horta from FAU, 7-5, 2-6, 5-3 (Ret. Inj.). Bryan Triana forced the third set against Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo from USF, but ultimately fell by a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
Quinn Snyder competed in the qualifying round yesterday but fell to Breno Marques from UNF by a score of 6-3, 6-2. He then played in the singles qualifying consolation round against Finn Stodder from FAU. Snyder nearly forced a third set, but fell 6-4, 7-6(4).
