CARY, N.C. – The UCF women's tennis team picked up two victories on the first day of competition at the Wolfpack Invitational/Ranked Spotlight on Thursday, September 23, at the Cary Tennis Park.
Representing UCF in action today was the duo of Valeriya Zeleva and Evgeniya Levashova and the tandem of Marie Mattel and Nandini Sharma.
Doubles action is played in a field of up to 32 teams, divided into pods and played as a round-robin within those pods for three total matches. The Knights competed in the first two rounds today while the third match will be played on Sunday.
Both of UCF's doubles team picked up wins in the first round. Zeleva/ Levashova came out strong to win their match over Duke's duo of Chloe Beck and Emma Jackson by a score of 6-2 while Mattel/Sharma showed grit to edge out the tandem of Hibah Shaikh and Melodie Collard of UVA in 7-6 (5).
Fighting hard in the second round, Zeleva/Levashova were unable to top the UNC's duo of Cameron Morra and Carson Tanguilig, falling 7-6 (5). Mattel/Sharma also fell in the second round to the doubles team of Salma Ewing and Snow Han from USC by a score of 6-2.
The Knights will get one more chance at doubles on Sunday for the third and final round.
