Travale Secures Spot in U.S. Amateur

ORLANDO – Another member of the UCF men's golf team has qualified to this year's United States Amateur Championship as Johnny Travale made the cut after finishing first overall in the 36-hole St. John's qualifier Tuesday afternoon.

Travale led all golfers as he turned in an 8-under 64 first round before securing his spot at the top of the leaderboard with a 68(-4) round two. Travale finished the day with a 132(-12) score, beating out second place by six strokes. He joins UCF newcomer Luis Carrera, who also qualified for the U.S. Amateur after he won the 36-hole Mexico City qualifier with an 8-under 136 score on July 7. 

The 121st U.S. Amateur Championship will be played from August 9-15 at Oakmont Country Club in Verona, Pennsylvania and will be broadcasted live on one of NBC, Golf Channel, or Peacock.

The champion will receive a gold medal, as well as exemptions from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Amateurs, the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club, the 2022 Open Championship, conducted by the R&A (must be an amateur) and a likely invitation into the 2022 Masters Tournament (must be an amateur).

Notable past U.S. Amateur champions include Jack Nicklaus (1959, 1961), Phil Mickelson (1990), Tiger Woods (1994, 1995, 1996), Bryson DeChambeau (2015) and more.

Travale paced the Knights with a 71.56 scoring average this season after wrapping up the regular season at The American Championship with a 216(E) score over 54 holes to finish tied for 12th place.

The rising senior from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada paced the Knights at four tournament this spring and was named conference golfer of the week on April 7 after finishing tied for sixth place at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational with a 69-69-71=209(-7) score.

Travale was the lone Knight to play in the NCAA Tallahassee regional championship this season. He shot 211(-5) to finish in 13th place.
