Luis Carrera Joins Men's Golf

ORLANDO – UCF Men's Golf head coach Bryce Wallor secured another new addition to the squad on Wednesday as the Knights announced the signing of Luis Carrera to the squad.

A Mexico City native, Carrera comes to UCF from Sam Houston State University, where he was a three-year member of the Bearkats' men's golf team. Carrera will enter the 2021-22 season with two years of eligibility remaining as he plans on taking full advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Luis will bring both NCAA regional and NCAA national championship experience to the program next year and beyond," said Wallor. "We're extremely excited to add a player with his record to an already talented roster."

As a junior at Sam Houston in 2020-21, Carrera played in eight events. His 72.54 scoring average was a career-high and second on the team. He shined in the postseason for the Bearkats, finishing T-16 in the NCAA Stillwater Regional after shooting 77-68-73=218(+2) before shooting a 4-under 284 in the NCAA National Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz., to place T-22.

Carrera shot seven rounds in the 60's in 2020-21 and finished at par or better 10 times. His best finish was T-4 at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, where he shot 72-69-68=209(-7). Overall, Carrera finished the season with three top-10 scores and five top-20 scores.

In his sophomore season in 2019-20, Carrera carded a 74.14 scoring average in seven events and recorded two top-10 finishes for the Bearkats. His season was highlighted by a runner-up finish at The All-American Intercollegiate, where he shot 68-66-74=208(-8).

In his first year at the collegiate level in 2018-19, Carrera was named the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year after playing in seven events for the Bearkats and finishing with a 74.25 scoring average.

Coming out of high school, Carrera was the number one ranked junior amateur golfer in Mexico. He won the Mayakoba Junior International with a total score of 220 strokes (73-72-75) and finished third at the International Junior Masters with a 144(E) score.

Carrera currently owns a World Amateur Golf Ranking of 397 and is the No. 1 ranked player from Mexico. He is the fifth new addition to the to the UCF Men's Golf 2021 class after incoming freshmen Reinaldo Simoni, Nicholas Estrada and Richard Dou already signed their national letters of intent, while the Knights also announced Texas Tech transfer Markus Braadlie to the squad in May.
