TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Knights' season officially came to a close on Wednesday as Johnny Travale shot 72(E) to finish in 13th place at the NCAA Tallahassee regional with a 211(-5) total.
"It was a good experience to give myself a chance at making it to nationals. I didn't have my best game this week, but [UCF Men's Golf head coach Bryce Wallor] helped me manage my game well to shoot some decent scores," said Travale. "Each day, I made some mistakes that cost me the opportunity to go to Arizona."
After a solid first two days where Travale shot a combined five under par, he only added to that early success on the front nine on Wednesday, eagling hole five for the second time in the tournament and adding a birdy and a bogey to sit at two under.
The back nine did not go as smoothly. Travale bogeyed a tournament-high four times over the final nine holes, and with only two birdies to make up for it, he found himself back at 72(E) to finish the day.
Still, Travale found himself in the top 15 against some of the top competition in the country, out-scoring golfers on advancing teams such as No. 2 Florida State (-34), No. 11 Georgia (-17), No. 27 Georgia Tech (-16), No. 16 Liberty (-15) and TCU (-9). Those five teams will now move on to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Georgia's Davis Thompson led all golfers with a 202(-14) score. The top individual not on team that finished top five in the tournament, Jacksonville's Michael Sakane (203, -13) will also advance to the championship.
