Zeleva Earns AAC Player of the Week Honor

ORLANDO, Fla. – After another incredible performance this weekend and a win over a top-15 opponent, Valeriya Zeleva has been named the American Athletic Conference's Player of the Week.

Overall, Zeleva went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles over the weekend. The pair of singles victories extends her active winning streak to seven matches.

The weekend began with a match against No. 24 Furman. Despite falling in doubles, it was a day to remember for No. 67 Zeleva. She earned a straight set victory over a No. 15 Katarina Kozarov, topping her by a score of 6-3, 6-4. The victory was Zeleva's fourth over a ranked opponent this season.

The successful weekend continued the next day as the Knights hosted FAU on Sunday. Zeleva, along with Ksenia Kuznetsova earned a victory at the top doubles spot as the nation's No. 60 pair edged FAU's Natalia Boltinskaya and Louie McLelland.  Zeleva and Kuznetsova are 8-1 as a tandem this season and earned the promotion to No. 1 doubles this weekend.

Zeleva kept it rolling in singles, earning another straight set victory at No. 1 singles. She beat Boltinskaya 6-1, 7-5 and was the second court finished, pulling her team within one of the clincher.

This is the second time this season that Zeleva has been name as The American's Player of the Week. She's doubled her total of conference weekly honors this season, earning two this year and two back in the 2019 season.

The last time Zeleva won the conference's weekly honor, she also was named the ITA/UTR player of the week, a national award given to the player who elevated their UTR rating by a substantial amount over a week's time.
