ORLANDO, Fla. – After beating two ranked opponents in singles and clinching a match over an in-state foe, Gabriel Decamps has been named the American Athletic Conference's Player of the Week.
This is the third time this season that Decamps has been honored as The American's Player of the Week. That matches the amount he won in last season's shortened campaign and has earned the award seven times throughout his career.
Decamps' outstanding weekend began in doubles on Friday as he and Trey Hilderbrand were the lone remaining court left in action after courts two and three had split. Decamps and Hilderbrand prevailed in a tight contest, beating FSU's Sebastian Arcila and Alex Knaff 6-4.
The remainder of the match against the Seminoles was just as tight. After taking the early lead, FSU found a way to even the score at 3-3. The top singles court was the only one remaining, where No. 16 Decamps was in a three-set battle with No. 77 Knaff. Decamps prevailed by winning the final frame with ease, topping the Seminole's top singles player 7-6, 1-6, 6-1.
Decamps thrived in the team's 4-2 loss to No. 17 Georgia on Sunday and was absolutely dominant over No. 9 Trent Bryde. He picked up a straight set victory over the Bulldog's top singles player, besting Bryde by a count of 6-1, 6-3.
The two singles wins brings Decamps to 4-1 against ranked opposition this season and an overall record of 10-1. He's been on fire as of late, winning eight straight matches. Perhaps more impressively, Decamps now owns two victories over top-10 opponents. He previously beat Texas A&M's top singles player who sits at No. 4 in the country.
