ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 22 UCF women's tennis team is set to open their home schedule as they'll host three matches in four days beginning with No. 21 Florida at 3 p.m. on Friday at the UCF Collegiate Tennis Center at the USTA National Campus.
After a busy ITA Kickoff Weekend that saw the Knights play two top-20 opponents in a span of 24 hours, UCF will face Florida on Friday, Georgia Southern on Saturday and Old Dominion on Monday.
This is just the second time in the Bryan Koniecko era that the two Florida foes will collide. The first meeting was on College MatchDay in 2019 where the Knights pulled out a thrilling 4-3 victory thanks to Nandini Sharma's clincher in the third set at the sixth singles position. It was the first victory over the Gators in program history. The Black and Gold will take on Florida again this season, this time in Gainesville on Feb. 9. The Gators are out to a 1-0 start to their season after sweeping Georgia State.
Less than 24 hours later, UCF will host Georgia Southern, a match that was added to the schedule late Wednesday night. The Eagles are 1-1 early in the season, coming off a 5-2 win that snapped a 21-year losing streak to the College of Charleston. Georgia Southern finished the shortened 2020 campaign with a 9-4 record.
The Knights will be off Sunday before hosting Old Dominion at noon on Monday. The Knights visited the then-ranked Monarchs last season and came out with a dominating 6-1 victory. They picked up a win over Notre Dame in their consolation match at ITA Kickoff Weekend. Old Dominion finished last season in the Oracle/ITA team rankings and a record of 11-2.
The Knights drew some tough opponents to start 2021. They fell in a tight third set on the lone remaining court to No. 18 Wake Forest before losing to No. 8 NC State to close out their ITA Kickoff Weekend.
CAPACITY, MASKS AND MORE
The USTA National Campus will allow 25 percent of capacity of fans at matches. Masks and social distancing in the stands are required. A daily health waiver must be filled out upon entry to the venue. Spectators will not be allowed in the indoor tennis facility if the match needs to be moved for any reason.
