Softball Earns Team Academic Excellence Award

ORLANDO – UCF Softball added to its impressive 2019-20 accolades on Wednesday as the program was honored with the American Athletic Conference Team Academic Excellence Award.

It is the second time in UCF's seven years in the AAC that the Knights' softball team won a Team Academic Excellence Award, last winning the award in 2014-15.

The award selections are made by the conference's faculty athletics representatives. The winning teams were chosen based on the 2019-20 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster at the end of the academic year, weighing each student's GPA by credit-hour completed.

In addition to getting it done in the classroom, UCF was off to one of its best starts to a season ever as the Knights went 21-5-1 overall (.777 winning percentage), including an 11-game winning streak from Feb. 14 through March 1.

UCF was also included in the two major national softball polls' final rankings to end the season, with the Knights checking in at No. 21 in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll and No. 24 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 Poll. The Knights were ranked No. 7 in the first and only NCAA RPI ranking released.

In July, UCF placed a record 302 student-athletes on the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, which included 23 members from softball. In May, UCF student-athletes extended their record-setting streak in the classroom to 25 consecutive semesters with a department grade-point average of 3.0 or better.

In addition to softball's two Team Academic Excellence Awards, UCF has collected the award in football and women's basketball in 2013-14, football, men's basketball in 2014-15, men's golf and women's tennis in 2015-16, volleyball in 2016-17, men's tennis in 2017-18, volleyball in 2018-19 and 2019-20, and rowing in 2018-19 and 2019-20.
