Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Ana Laura

I was born and raised in the state of Veracruz, Mexico – well known for the "jarocha" harp music, and for having 70% of Mexico's coastline on the gulf. The first time I left my home country for a long period time was when I started college. I love my culture, my people, and my family; I will always be grateful for my family and for everything they have given me in my life. Mexico is, and always will be my home, and every tradition will always be a part of me.

I had the opportunity to grow up in a really close family, and there is one day that goes by that I do not miss them. They have always pushed me to be better, to be strong, and to never give up. My entire life, my father has always said "Los Collado nunca se rinden," which roughly translates to "The Collado family never gives up."

There are many great things I can say about my country, but let's start with the food! Tacos, tamales, gorditas, mole, enchiladas, chilaquiles, the list goes on. So many delicious dishes that nobody gets tired of. Going back home to visit during school breaks is always a special moment. I am always well received by my family with my favorite Mexican dishes, either Tacos al pastor or mole tamales.

Some more Mexican favorites are the mariachi band, Mexican candy, tequila, and pan dulce. Mexico is also a country that has a lot of history, including ancient cultures of the Mayas, Olmecas, Aztecas, and more.

I am proud to be Mexican, and I am thankful to be Hispanic. We are more than just an ethnicity; we are all family.
