Gabriel Named Davey O’Brien National QB of the Week

ORLANDO – We are three days away from UCF's second game of the 2020 season, but sophomore quarterback Dillon Gabriel is still hauling in honors from his performance in last Saturday's win over Georgia Tech. On Wednesday, Gabriel was named the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week.

This award comes on the heels of being named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, a Manning Award Star of the Week, and the Walter Camp National Player of the Week.

Gabriel led the 13th-ranked Knights to a 49-21 victory over Georgia Tech in their first game of the 2020 season, throwing for a career-high 417 yards and matching a career best with four touchdown passes in the victory.

He beat out Notre Dame's Ian Bok, SMU's Shane Buechele, BC's Phil Jurkovec, Miami's D'Eriq King, Pittsburgh's Kenny Pickett, Texas State's Tyler Vitt and Liberty's Malik Willis for this week's honor.

The Davey O'Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O'Brien Foundation has given away more than $1 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O'Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrien.org.

Gabriel and the Knights are set to get back in action this Saturday. UCF takes on ECU at noon with television coverage on ABC, streaming capabilities on ESPN+ and radio sounds on FM 96.9 The Game.
