The 2020 edition of the PGA Championship is set to start this Thursday, August 6, and two former UCF men's golfers highlight the Knights' past involvement in the event.
Robert Damron and Cliff Kresge both left their mark at UCF before going on to have illustrious professional careers that included trips to the PGA Championship.
In 2001, Damron became the first former Knight to play at the event. He would go on to shoot 68-73-71-73 for a 285(+5) score, good to help him finish tied for 66th overall.
Inducted into the UCF Athletic Hall of Fame officially in 2002, Damron played golf for the Knights from 1991-94 before leaving to turn professional. In his time as a Knight, Damron was a three-time All-American honorable mention and set the school record for the most wins in school history with five, including winning it all at the prestigious invitation-only John Hancock All-American Tournament and Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
Seven years after Damron left his mark at the PGA Championship, Cliff Kresge would get his chance. In two rounds of play in 2008, Kresge shot 83-72 for a 155 total. Kresge did not finish.
Kresge played golf at UCF from 1988-1990. In his time in the Black and Gold, UCF had its first two NCAA East Regional appearances and first NCAA Championship round appearance in 1990. He was inducted into the UCF Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
