Knights Named USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award Recipient

ORLANDO – The UCF volleyball team added to its historic 2019 season on Monday as it was named a recipient of the 2019-20 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale. In total, 1,313 teams have earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2019-2020 season, topping last year's record by almost 200 teams. 232 programs received Team Academic honors for the first time in 2020.

"In a most unique world, our team had two of the greatest academic semesters in the classroom, combined with one of the greatest seasons in school history on the volleyball court," said head coach Todd Dagenais. "We have always dreamed of building a program that exemplifies the true essence of being a student-athlete and we are proud of what we have become and even more excited about what we are trying to become."

The Knights compiled a 3.62 cumulative GPA in Fall and 3.63 GPA in the Spring, bringing their cumulative GPA to a 3.63 for the 2019-20 academic year. UCF was among the nation's top academic-performing programs for the tenth time in program history in 2019. All ten campaigns have come during the Todd Dagenais era.

The USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but two, while more than doubling the total over the last eight academic years. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 1,313.
