ORLANDO, Fla. – After another 2-0 week in singles play, junior Gabriel Decamps repeated as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Decamps was victorious over a ranked player in singles and a ranked duo in doubles over the weekend.
Decamps has now won four straight matches at the top spot in the singles lineup for the Knights. He began his weekend with a straight set victory over Wake Forest's No. 43 Bar Botzer, a 6-4, 6-3 win. Decamps secured a three-set victory on Friday, defeating Virginia's Carl Soderlund 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. Soderlund was ranked as the nation's 15th best singles player when the Knights played Virginia last season, but he had no ranking coming out of the fall season.
This is the second consecutive week that Decamps has earned the weekly honor. He triumphed over the No. 7 and No. 30 ranked singles players last week. He now sits with a 4-2 record at the top singles spot, facing a ranked opponent in all but one match. Decamps is proving that he is a force to be reckoned with early on in the 2020 campaign.
In doubles, Decamps alongside Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi went 1-0 in the second doubles spot. Together, the No. 6 pair in the nation defeated No. 53 Gianni Ross and William Woodall of Virginia by a count of 6-3.
Decamps currently sits at No. 22 in the singles rankings, a mark he achieved by going 12-4 this fall. New singles and doubles rankings drop tomorrow, Feb. 5, as the first rankings of the spring.
