ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 24 UCF men's tennis team is set to play another match on the road as they visit Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
The Knights are looking to keep the momentum rolling from last Sunday's 6-1 win over Virginia, a team that came into the season ranked No. 10 in the nation. The Black and Gold earned their highest ranking in program history with that victory, climbing to No. 24 in the Oracle/ITA team rankings. That mark edged their pervious best of No. 28 which they achieved twice last season and three times overall.
Illinois came into the 2020 campaign ranked as the No. 13 team in the nation. The Illini haven't gotten out to the start they had hoped for, posting a 1-4 record to this point. Two of those losses came to top five teams though as they fell to No. 4 North Carolina and most recently No. 3 Florida. The lone victory for the Illini came in the consolation bracket of ITA Kickoff Weekend where Illinois topped Texas Tech 4-1.
UCF has faced Illinois just once before, dropping a tough contest last season. This is the first time the Knights will visit the Illini in the Black and Gold's 48-year history. A win on Sunday would be UCF's second "Power 6" victory of the season. The win over Virginia stood as the first.
Sunday's match is the final one of a six-match road trip for the Knights. UCF will play just their second home match of the season as they host FAU on Feb. 29. That's a 43 day span from the first home match to the second.
