UCF vs. #24 San Diego January 25, 2020, Noon | UCF vs. #10 UCLA/San Diego State January 26, 2020, 12:30 or 4:30 P.M. |
ORLANDO, Fla. – The UCF men's tennis team is headed west for ITA Kickoff Weekend in Los Angeles and will face the No. 24 San Diego Toreros on Saturday at noon ET.
The No. 10 UCLA Bruins are hosts of the event and will face the San Diego State Aztecs on day one. Depending on the result of each match, UCF will face one of those two teams. If the Knights win on Saturday, they'll face the winner of the UCLA/San Diego State match on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET. With a loss, the Black and Gold would play in the consolation match on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET.
The Black and Gold had the 16th overall pick in the ITA Kickoff Draft back in June, where they selected to be the No. 3 seed in the four-team UCLA bracket.
UCF started their season off strong, beating Mercer on opening night 6-1. After a solid doubles point victory, the Knights got out to a quick start in singles, winning four of the six first sets. The Knights closed opening weekend with a match against the nation's top team, the Florida Gators. Gabriel Decamps and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi gave the Knights a chance in doubles as they were the first court done. After a tight doubles point went to Florida, Bogdan Pavel was the only Knight able to collect a point in singles as the Black and Gold fell 6-1.
No. 24 San Diego was victorious in their only match this season, defeating Fresno State by a count of 4-3. The Toreros earned clutch wins on courts three, four and one which helped them beat Fresno State after losing the doubles point.
No. 10 UCLA cruised in their only match of the season, topping BYU 7-0. San Diego State has split their two decisions this season, falling 7-0 to No. 15 Oklahoma State before defeating UC San Diego 6-1.
Saturday will mark the first time in program history that the Knights will face San Diego. It would also be the first time that UCF would face UCLA, should the matchups shake out favorably. The Black and Gold are 0-2 against San Diego State in their history.
