ORLANDO – Former UCF men's basketball head coach Chuck Machock passed away on Saturday, Jan. 4. He was 82.
Machock helped usher UCF into the NCAA Division I ranks as the Knights' head coach for their final season in NCAA Division II in 1983-84 and their first in Division I in 1984-85. He held a record of 25-31 as UCF's head coach.
A native of Elyria, Ohio, Machock was an analyst on Cincinnati men's basketball radio broadcasts from 1993-2017, making multiple visits to Addition Financial Arena as the Bearcats played the Knights as members of the American Athletic Conference.
Machock played at Cincinnati from 1956-57, was a student coach from 1958-59 and an assistant coach from 1990-93.
By the time he capped off his coaching career in the early 1990s, Machock had built a career that spanned 29 seasons at various levels. He started at the high school level at St. Henry's High School (1960) in Erlanger, Ky., before returning home to Elyria High School (1961-66). He then moved up to the collegiate level, earning an assistant coaching position at Akron (1968-69); the head coach title at Steubenville College (1969-72); assistant coaching positions at West Virginia (1972-74), Ball State (1974-76) and Ohio State (1977-83); and his head coaching stint at UCF (1983-85).
Machock is survived by his wife Dottie, as well as by his three children Bob, Sandy and Mindy and three grandchildren Mitchell, Kaylee and Emily.
