ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women's basketball team closed out 2019 on a high note, topping Central Michigan, 64-58, on Monday evening in Addition Financial Arena.
UCF (8-4) extended its win streak to four in a row while snapping a seven-game win streak for Central Michigan (7-4).
The Knights fell behind early as the Chippewas led by as many as six in the opening frame and took a 15-11 edge into the second quarter.
Six points from Brittney Smith, Kay Kay Wright and Sianni Martin in the first three minutes of the second frame pushed the Knights in front, 17-15, and the Black and Gold remained in control from that point on. Leading 29-23 at halftime, UCF never relinquished its advantage in the second half, weathering a late push from the visitors for the final 64-58 tally.
Kay Kay Wright continued her hot streak, finishing with a team-leading 20 points with five assists and six rebounds. For the fourth straight game, Brittney Smith also finished in double figures, chipping in 12 points. Sianni Martin added 10 points and tied the team-high with four steals.
Masseny Kaba set a career-best with four blocks. The junior forward just missed a double-double, grabbing a season-best 12 rebounds while scoring eight points. Diamond Battles matched Martin with four steals.
The defense did it again.
- UCF's defense was once again stifling – holding Central Michigan to a 37.9 field goal percentage.
- The Knights forced the Chippewas into 24 turnovers, which UCF converted into 20 points.
- The Black and Gold also scored 21 fast break points and 36 points in the paint.
- UCF collected 15 steals and had a season-best six team blocks.
Kay Kay continues to be on fire.
- Picking up where she left off before the holiday break, Wright finished with 20 points.
- Over her last four games, she's poured in 90 points for an average of 22.5 points per game while shooting 49.2 percent from the floor.
- The Orlando native is also creating for her teammates – averaging 4.0 assists per game – and has a 1.6 assist-turnover ratio.
- Wright is also averaging 2.8 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game during this four-game stretch.
