NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women's tennis team completed day one of the ITA National Fall Championships on Wednesday. Rebeka Stolmar highlighted the day for the Knights as she was victorious in both her singles and doubles matches.
No. 98 Stolmar continued the great start to her senior season in the first round of singles play. Stolmar made quick work of Oklahoma State's Dariya Detkovskaya besting her in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Stolmar would meet her later on in the day in doubles.
No. 31 Stolmar and Marie Mattel continue to be unstoppable as a tandem as they chalked up another victory in round one of the doubles draw. The Knight pair was matched up with Oklahoma State's Dariya Detkovskaya and Bunyawi Thamchaiwat for the second time this fall. Just as the first meeting, the UCF tandem prevailed as Stolmar and Mattel went on to win 6-4, 7-5. The UCF tandem is now 12-1 together this fall as they continue to find ways to win win matches.
UCF's top duo of No. 7 Ksenia Kuznetsova and Valeriya Zeleva were locked in a tight battle in the first round of doubles action. The Knight pair took the first set but fell in the second, forcing a third set super tiebreaker. Vanderbilt's duo of Georgia Drummy and Christina Rosca wound up edging Kuznetsova and Zeleva 4-6, 7-5, 10-3.
Mattel's tournament started with a tough opponent in North Carolina's Cameron Morra, who is ranked No. 12 in the nation and is the tournament's No. 12 seed. Mattel was defeated by Morra by a count of 6-1, 6-1.
No. 29 Zeleva was matched up with South Carolina's No. 49 Mia Horvit for her first-round match. Horvit continued an impressive fall campaign by topping Zeleva 6-1, 6-1.
