ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF men's tennis team will have two participants in the ITA Fall National Championships in Newport Beach, Calif. which runs from Nov. 6-10.The tournament will see college tennis' elite meet on the west coast and is the toughest collegiate tournament of the fall season.
Gabriel Decamps and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi are the two Knights that will compete at Nationals beginning on Wednesday. The two have had a magnificent fall as a pair and will compete in both the doubles and singles portions of the tournament.
Decamps and Grassi Mazzuchi have combined to post a 7-1 record so far this fall. Six of those wins are over ranked opposition, their best win coming against the nation's No. 2 pair consisting of Texas Tech's Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn. The Knight duo will face Princeton's No. Payton Holden and Ryan Seggerman in the first round of the doubles draw on Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST. The UCF tandem has already faced the Princeton pair once this season, beating them 6-1, 7-6(2) in the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships.
No. 29 Decamps has earned a 7-3 record to his point in the fall, collecting four ranked wins along the way, his biggest perhaps being a straight set victory over Wake Forest's No. 15 Bar Botzer in the ITA All-American Championships. Decamps will begin his run at this tournament on Wednesday at 11 a.m. EST as he'll square off with Oregon's No. 115 Joshua Charlton.
No. 82 Grassi Mazzuchi continues to build upon his success from his freshman campaign in which he posted an 11-7 record in singles play. This fall, Grassi Mazzuchi has collected nine wins in twelve matches. He was crowned the runner up of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships after falling to No. 52 Duarte Vale of Florida in a tight 6-4, 6-4 contest. Grassi Mazzuchi will face the tournament's No. 3 seed, No. 11 John McNally of Ohio State, in the first round on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. EST.
