ORLANDO. Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – After a successful fall tournament season, the UCF women's tennis team has two doubles tandems ranked inside the top 15 and two singles players inside the top 55.
Rebeka Stolmar and Marie Mattel can now say that they are the highest ranked duo in program history as they check in at No. 3 in the doubles rankings. Together, Stolmar and Mattel went 13-2 this fall, defeating six currently ranked duos. Their lone losses during the tournament season came to the No. 1 and No. 4 duos. The Knight duo ended the 2019 dual match season at No. 78, cracking into the rankings in the final release of the season. They began their fall ranked No. 31. The tandem performed at an elite level in some major tournaments, as they won the ITA Southeast Regional Championship. They also pieced together an impressive campaign in the ITA All-American Championships, advancing from the qualifying rounds all the way to the main draw semifinals.
Ksenia Kuznetsova and Valeriya Zeleva remain in the top 15, checking in at No. 11 in the doubles rankings. They only played six matches on the season, posting a 3-3 record, defeating two ranked opponents with all three losses coming to top 20 teams. Kuznetsova and Zeleva made a run at the ITA All-American Championships, reaching the semifinals and qualifying for the ITA National Fall Championships.
After a 12-6 singles run, Stolmar jumps to No. 34 in the rankings, which is significantly higher than her initial fall ranking of No. 98. Half of her victories came against top 100 ranked opponents. She was the consolation bracket champion in the ITA All-American singles draw as she worked her way through the qualifying draw to the main draw. She stumbled in her first match in the main draw but went on to topple Furman's No. 13 Katarina Kozarov in straight sets in the consolation final.
Mattel jumps back into the singles rankings after not being ranked to begin the fall season. She sits at No. 54 in the singles rankings after compiling an 11-6 record in the four tournaments she participated in. This is the first time Mattel has been ranked since Feb. 20 when she was ranked No. 119 after a perfect 8-0 start in her singles career.
