ORLANDO, Fla. - On Wednesday, UCF Men's Golf Head Coach Bryce Wallor announced the signing of Leo Herrera to a National Letter of Intent as a member of the 2020 freshman class. Herrera, the son of Leo and Marisol Herrera, who resides in Doral, is a student-athlete at American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla.
Herrera is currently a member of the Venezuelan National Team and is also a three-time member of the Florida Cup Team. As one of the best players in all of junior golf, Leo has been nominated as a 2019 Rolex Junior All-American (Honorable Mention), having reached 20th in the Rolex Golf Rankings. Leo has also been ranked inside the Top 100 in both the Junior Golf Scoreboard and Golfweek Junior Rankings.
Herrera has won multiple American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and Florida Junior Tour (FJT) events. In 2017, Leo won the AJGA Jim Bell Memorial at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, which plays host to the PGA Tour's Bay Hill Invitational. During the summer of 2019, Herrera won the FJT at Old Corkscrew in Naples, Florida, and the AJGA Bishops Gate Golf Academy Junior Championship at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club, the latter of which plays host to the American Athletic Conference Championship.
Herrera has also participated in The Junior PLAYERS Championship, the 44th Junior PGA Championship, and the AJGA Thunderbird International Junior. He is currently the 74th ranked player in his class and 13th within the State of Florida on the Junior Golf Scoreboard.
"The signing of Leo Herrera to our 2020 class is a special one for our program," said UCF Men's Golf Head Coach Bryce Wallor. "We feel very fortunate to add Leo to an already strong team roster. Leo, an exceptional student-athlete, comes from a family who has fostered not only the development of their son's golf game, but more importantly, his academic credentials. Leo is one of the longest hitters that we have ever recruited, and as a proven tournament winner, we are excited to continue to see him develop his talents at UCF and make an impact within our program."
The UCF men's golf team, which finished first overall at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational earlier this fall, will resume its 2019-20 schedule in February. You can view their full 2019-20 schedule here.
