ORLANDO – The Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation announced the nominees for the 2019 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coaches, and UCF's Randy Shannon was among those honored on Wednesday.
There were 41 nominees for the award, selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 130 programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America, broadcasters, a college football hall of fame selection committee and current college head coaches.
Shannon, in his second season as the defensive coordinator at UCF, has helped lead the Knights to a 7-3 record in 2019.
His squad ranks second in the American Athletic Conference and 37th in the nation in total defense, allowing 348.6 yards per game. The Knight defense is also third in the conference in scoring defense, giving up just 23.6 points per outing.
Shannon's defense has been best on getting pressure in the backfield and defending the pass. The Knights rank second in the nation in tackles for loss per game, averaging 9.4 per game, and are 11th in the nation by holding opponents to a passing efficiency of 110.98.
Shannon won the Broyles Award in 2001 as the defensive coordinator at Miami.
The selection committee will select 15 semifinalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner. The finalists will travel to Little Rock, Ark., where the 2019 Broyles Award winner will be announced Dec. 10.
