TULSA, Okla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women's tennis team wrapped up their first day of qualifiers at the ITA All-American Championships, winning two of three singles matches.
No. 62 Ksenia Kuznetsova was coined as the ninth overall seed in the qualifying draw and proved exactly why in her first-round match against Santa Clara's Maddie Pothoff. The match was close, but Kuznetsova was able to pick up the straight set victory by a count of 6-4, 6-4. She'll face Oklahoma's Martina Capurro on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
No. 98 Rebeka Stolmar also found success on day one of qualifiers as she topped Purdue's Ena Babic 6-3, 6-0. Stolmar's tournament will continue against the No. 7 seeded Jaeda Daniel of North Carolina State. The two will square off on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
Marie Mattel's run in the tournament came to a close as she lost her first qualifying match. She made it through prequalifiers but fell to the No. 4 seeded Sabina Machalova of Ole Miss in a tight three set battle by a score of 2-6, 6-0, 7-5.
In doubles play, the No. 31 pair of Mattel and Stolmar were tabbed as the No. 2 seed of the qualifying draw. In the first round, the Knight duo downed Iowa's Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell and Samantha Mannix by a score of 8-7 (2). The Black and Gold faced Mississippi State's Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk and defeated the duo by a count of 8-5. Mattel and Stolmar will face Oklahoma State's Dariya Detkovskaya and Bunyawi Thamachaiwat on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
