ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – A breakout campaign in 2018-19 has led to preseason praise in 2019-20 for senior Kay Kay Wright. On Monday afternoon, she was named to the watch list for the 2020 Nancy Lieberman Award, which recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I basketball.

The Orlando native is one of 20 point guard candidates from across the country to be placed on the watch list. To be considered for this prestigious award, candidates exhibit the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of Class of 1996 Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman. Players can play their way onto or off of the list at any point in the 2019-20 season.

Just one week ago on Oct. 14, Wright was named the American Athletic Conference Co-Preseason Player of the Year and earned first team all-conference honors at The American Media Day.

Wright improved her all-around game as a junior, stepping up her scoring while maintaining her high level of defensive intensity and distribution of the ball during the 2018-19 campaign. In 33 games, she reached double figures 29 times, with 16 of those being 20-plus-point performances. She nearly doubled her scoring average – again – finishing with 18.0 points per game, pouring in 595 points, which ranked second on the single season chart at UCF. She also averaged 4.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

The point guard enters her final season at UCF ranked fourth all-time in assists (383), sixth in steals (207) and is just 46 points shy of joining the career top 10 in points (1,108).

The Selection Committee for the Nancy Lieberman Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers. New to the award this season is Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2020 Lieberman Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Lieberman and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.

The winner of the 2020 Lieberman Award will be presented at The College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 10, 2020, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five.
