Mattel Shines at USTA Fall Collegiate Classic

Tournament Results

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women's tennis team concluded the USTA Fall Collegiate Classic on Sunday. The tournament was headlined by Marie Mattel, who defeated two top-80 opponents on her way to the Final Four.

Mattel performed at an elite level against some of college tennis' best. After knocking off the tournament's No. 5-8 seed Alana Smith and No. 9-16 seed Daevenia Achong on day one, Mattel played two matches inside the main draw on day two. Mattel had no problem advancing past Virginia's Sofia Munera in her first matchup of the day. She topped Munera 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the Final Four of the tournament. In that match, she faced the NCAA singles champion Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami. She put up a fight, but fell 6-2, 6-1 to end her tournament.

Nandini Sharma began her tournament with a statement win over Florida's No. 9-16 seeded Victoria Emma before advancing to play Perez-Somarriba. Miami's top singles player got the best of Sharma, knocking her out of the main draw.

Sharma's day two was a success as she won both of her matches. She was matched up with North Carolina State's Jaeda Daniel, defeating her 6-2, 6-1. Sharma would advance to play Miami's Achong and get the victory over her 6-2, 6-4. In her final match of the weekend, Sharma fell to South Carolina's Mia Horvit 6-0, 6-3.

After losing her first match to Ohio State's No. 9-16 seeded Shiori Fukuda day one, No. 98 Rebeka Stolmar bounced back and beat Oklahoma State's Catherine Guilhur in three sets. Day two saw Stolmar fall to Adriana Reami of North Carolina State by a score of 6-0, 6-3.

Stolmar's match against Reami was her final one of the tournament, as Domenika Turkovic replaced her for the remainder of her scheduled matches. Turkovic's first match of the tournament came on Saturday afternoon as she faced Guilhur. It was a tight match throughout, but Guilhur edged Turkovic on a third set super tiebreaker 3-6, 6-2, 13-11. On Sunday, Turkovic was locked in another close battle with Oklahoma State's Alana Wolfberg that also went to another third set super tiebreaker. Turkovic was defeated 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 to finish the weekend.

On Friday, No. 31 Mattel and Stolmar defeated South Carolina's Mia Horvit and Megan Davies 6-2. Unfortunately, the pair withrdrew from their scheduled match on Sunday.
The other UCF pair consisting of Sharma and Turkovic fell in both their matches. They lost to Virginia's Amber O'Dell and Sofia Munera on Friday 6-1 and were edged by North Carolina State's Jaeda Daniel and Adriana Reami 6-4.
